Order any hardware needed to provide the necessary serial ports. For 4 or more machines, a Comtrol multi-serial port device is recommended.

If the number of machines to connect is small, use a PCI card that plugs in a slot in your computer and provides multiple serial ports.

If there is more than one machine to network, decide how to provide the number of serial ports needed. Allow at least an extra 5' beyond the minimum length required. First, determine the length of the cables needed. Like most other projects, the more time spent planning, the less time spent implementing (and correcting problems you didn't anticipate). Our network consists of ten Tajima machines but the technology works with just one embroidery machine (actually it's easier). The specifics in this article apply to Tajima embroidery machines and Wilcom digitizing software, but the principles will be similar for other machines and software. The purpose of this article is to share our experience so others may avoid the pitfalls we encountered. As we went through the process, we discovered a few critical elements that caused us needless expense and frustration. As we started planning the process, we were unable to find a comprehensive source of information about how to accomplish our objective. We decided to network our machines for the reasons listed above. By connecting your machine(s) directly to your design computer, you eliminate the need to maintain a floppy disk library and all the hassles that go with it.

So you can compare prices, some recommended embroidery software comes from Dime Inspirations and Embrilliance.Tired of chasing floppy disks around your facility? Sending and receiving your designs with e-mail? The double density 720K disks used by embroidery machines are being replaced by other media in the general computer world and are becoming harder to find.

If you need to create your own patches, then you'll need full on digitizing software, and that's not available on any embroidery machine. When it comes to software, you'll want it so you can arrange multiple patches in a hoop, and also so you can color sort to speed the stitching process. You'll probably have to call or email manufacturers to get the details on some of these machines, and some, like the Singer Superb200 are not available from the company support for it may be harder to find.

Sewing area size effectively limits the size of patch you'll be able to do, and also the number of patches you will be able to fit into a hoop. Some machines come with a hoop that is larger than their sewing area. Since you want to do 10-50 patches a day, I'd recommend finding the one with the largest sewing area. I'm familiar with some of these machines, but not all.
